| Importance
of the Podiatrist at the long term care Facilities:
A Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (DPM) or podiatrists is a physician who
practices on the lower extremities, primarily on the feet and ankles.
The podiatrist strives to improve the overall health and well-being
of patients by focusing on preventing, diagnosing, and treating conditions
associated with the foot and ankle.
In the geriatric population, there are many factors that make the podiatrist
essential for these types of patients. These include diabetes, gout,
and peripheral vascular disease, among others. In addition, loss of
mobility and reduced vision make proper foot care difficult to achieve.
In many cases, a small foot problem in an elderly patient, if left untreated,
can turn into a major one and even become life threatening.
